The man secured the injunction in after High Court judges agreed it violated his right to privacy. A decision was made at a later date to allow the media to identify Helen Wood, a former sex worker and reality TV star who appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in A report by The Sun claims he will be identified in a US magazine while the injunction remains in place in the UK, meaning he cannot be named by publications here.
The man, named in court documents as PJS, has been identified by publications in the US, Scotland, Australia and by a political blogger. Bob Satchwell, of the Society of Editors, said : "The American media is making a mockery of our system of justice. The Sun said the court injunction was obtained five years ago to prevent it revealing the actor's identity in the UK. It comes after an American publication named another celebrity last month, who is alleged to have taken part in extra-marital activities despite the English media being banned from reporting his identity.
Supreme Court judges are still considering whether to lift the injunction in that case, in which the famous man is referred to only as PJS. Mark Stephens, media lawyer at legal firm Howard Kennedy, said he expected to see more foreign publications naming stars who were subject to privacy injunctions in Britain, the Press Association reports. He said: "Global stars seem to have fallen for the soft sell of claimant lawyers promising the earth but delivering a target to the backs of celebrities.
Last month, the president of the Supreme Court said individuals could still challenge the "more intense" dissemination of information that is already in the public arena. Two Premier League footballers - one of which is reported to have cheated with Big Brother contestant Imogen Thomas - are among the stars to have recently been granted gagging orders.
Model Jemima Khan was also forced to deny speculation this week that her private life had been protected. BBC Broadcaster Andrew Marr confessed last month to securing a High Court injunction in to prevent publication of details of a previous affair.
