Prior to David killing Goliath , he had no enemies — unless you consider his brothers as enemies. After killing Goliath and when he became a great military leader, that is when the enemies came.
However, the tone of this Psalm is not of a young, inexperienced man but of a seasoned veteran who has seen the hand of God show up time after time in his life.
You can be confident that no matter how challenging, dark or difficult the situation you face, God will always be with you and will never forsake you.
What God also promises is that his provision and protection will watch over you as well. God prepares a table for his sheep. Even in the midst of trouble, dark times and yes even enemies, God will give you a table of provision and protection. In the Old Testament, oil was symbolic of the Holy Spirit. So not only is God sending his presence, provision and protection, he is also providing you with power. Power to endure. Power to lead. Power to make wise decisions.
When David was chosen by Samuel as king of Israel, he was anointed with oil. This is also what Jesus promised in Acts :. It is the same with you. He provides, and the overflow of his provision is designed to be poured out to others. God has more than enough to help you regardless of your situation. His presence has no boundaries. His provision has no expiration. His power has no equal. The reason David could say this is because he had seen God work over and over in his life. David had history with God.
It started when he defeated and killed Goliath and continued throughout his lifetime. Our rhythms of church and community have been thrown off and many of our desires to fulfill the great commission put on hold physically.
But do not miss the end of the verses share that God prepares a table before us in the presence of our enemies. I do not know about you, but when I am in the presence of my enemies, the last thing I want to do is rest. Part of our cup running over is that our spiritual lives are filled up and restored by Christ, even in the midst of a broken and antagonistic world.
When we think about a cup running over, the image of abundance comes to mind. I think about a water fountain continually flowing over. I imagine the power and strength of Niagara Falls.
I ponder the thought of having continually more than I need. This is what we have in Christ. We have more than we could ever ask for in Him. He sustains us and fills our lives with His Spirit. In times of trouble or hardship, often God fills us up in unique ways.
It is how people in sickness can still glorify God. It is how the kid bullied in school can still find confidence in his identity in Christ. It is how Christians who encounter tragedy can trust the Lord in the pain. Our cups run not because of anything in which we can muster, but because of the great grace of the Holy Spirit at work within us. David wrote this particular Psalm in the midst of being on the run from King Saul who was out to kill him. If there were ever a testimony of a man who was filled up by the Lord in a horrible scenario, it was David.
As King Saul was on the manhunt for David, this young boy trusted and cried out to God. He was open and honest with his struggles but affirmed his faith and hope in the Lord. Although enemies surrounded him and the future seemed uncertain, David knew he could trust his life to the Lord. God is trustworthy to provide for the needs of His people in both good and hard times.
Psalm , with its picture of abundant blessings and provision, carries over into the New Testament as well. When feeding the five thousand, Jesus provided for the crowd beyond their needs using only five loaves of bread and two fish Matthew Once everyone had received enough, the disciples picked up an abundance of leftovers, which filled 12 baskets Matthew In another miracle, Christ enabled Peter, James, and John to catch a multitude of fish Luke , There were so many fish that the nets were full to bursting and the boats began to sink due to the abundant catch Luke Later, after His resurrection , Jesus performed a similar miracle John With the imagery of overflowing water, Jesus spoke of the future giving of the Spirit, which had not yet taken place John At Pentecost , the Holy Spirit was given and is still graciously given today to all who place faith in Jesus Acts ; 1 Corinthians God provided David and other Old Testament saints with everything they needed to live their lives for Him.
Today, believers are greatly blessed with the presence of the Holy Spirit, who is described as an overflowing spring of water given by the Lord Jesus John With the Holy Spirit, the believer has everything they need to live a godly life following God 2 Peter Rather, Christians can live a joyful life through the gift of salvation in Jesus Christ and the overwhelming blessing of the Holy Spirit.
Throughout the Bible, God has been shown to generously provide for His followers. You can truly experience a life where your cup overflows. Sophia Bricker is a freelance writer who enjoys researching and writing articles on biblical and theological topics.
